The Ponga Natural Park lies on the northern side of the Cordillera Cantabrica, in that area of the country known as "green Spain".

Consequently it enjoys a maritime climate due to its proximity to the Bay of Biscay, being cooler, greener and wetter than the southern side of the Cordillera.

A good depth of snow can fall in the winter, and remain on the higher mountains until May and even June.
