Enviriomental Policy

Enjoying your holiday naturally

Environmental values have a central place in the hotel's philosophy. We think that this helps contribute to the hotel's good and friendly atmosphere and enhances the well being of our guests. We also try and have a positive influence on the local rural community. With our local knowledge we believe we can help guests enjoy this privileged region to the fullest.

The major aspects of our environmental Policy which we believe help towards sustainable tourism are: · To make a conscientious effort to reduce our impact on the environment whilst maintaining a high level of comfort for our guest's. · To supports the local rural community and in particular those aspects which have a positive impact on the environment. · When ever possible to use local and organic produce. · To help both guests and the local community appreciate and respect the environment and in particular rural Asturias with its great bio diversity and protected areas.

Actions taken to help reduce the hotels impact on the environment.

Reducing the hotels energy consumption: Low consumption light bulbs are used whenever possible, along with sensors and time switches. The boiler is maintained regularly for optimum efficiency We have incorporated individual room temperature control so guest's can control the temperature according to their requirements We remind guests not to waste energy. Solar Panels. In 2007 we installed 18 m2 of solar panels to provide hot water for guests. When the hotels hot water needs are met the design gives us the option for heat to be directed through the central heating system. This helps to heat the hotel during periods of low occupancy, particularly the colder months at the start and end of the tourist season. Waste reduction and recycling We adopt measures to try and reduce the volume of non-recyclable waste we produce e.g. avoiding using individually wrapped items. We recycle paper, glass, and plastic, and encourage guests to do likewise All organic waste is also composted. Water Consumption We try to avoid excess water consumption by limiting flow rates on the showers and hand basins. We have installed measures for controlling toilet flushing. Avoid watering plants during the hot hours of the days. Train our staff on the importance of leaks.

Eco procurement When available we try and use environmentally friendly or eco labled products We use refillable bottles whereever possible and try to avoid using disposable bottles, toiletries, cups, plates and cutlery. Supporting the local rural community We try to support the local community and we provide guests with a list of establishments where local produce can be purchased and a list of activities in the area that are environmentally friendly Use of local and organic produce At Hotel Posada del Valle we believe that food is for enjoyment, but we also believe that what we eat and buy not only affects our own health and well being but also has a big impact on the environment and rural communities. For this reason at Hotel Posada del Valle we have taken a long time selecting from where and whom we purchase our basic ingredients. We have established relationships with a number of farmers, producers and suppliers to ensure a good supply of tasty, quality, healthy produce. Most are local, from Asturias or Northern Spain, many are organic and others use traditional or extensive production systems. We know that when buying from these people not only are we going to supply our guests with natural, wholesome, flavourfull produce in the restaurante, but at the same time are helping to contribute to the rural communities and the environment. Staff Training We provide staff training on: Environmental issues Right dosage of detergents and cleaners Effective waste, water, energy and resource management. Learning to appreciate and respect the environment We provide information on the Asturian countryside offer guided walks with cultural interpretation and actively encourage discussions on the environment with both guests and the local community. The Farm The hotel farm is a fully registered organic farm and amongst other activities we breed indigenous rare breeds. We have a long-term objective of trying to make extensive organic farming (like ours) more profitable so it may become of more interest to other farmers in the area.
