Mountain Villages
Located on vertiginous hill slopes, the villages of the
Asturian mountains preserve an enchanting atmosphere of
times past. Small houses with modest but well cared for
architecture with their wooden balconies and porches. Raised
granary stores or "Horreos" constructed entirely
from wood and stone stables with animals beneath and hay
stored above. All this provides the background on which,
even today, one can experience an authentic flavour of yesteryear.
Thought evocative images like villagers wearing clogs whilst
tending their animals or beans and maize hanging on the
balconies drying in the sun. Sensations like the smell of
a burning hearth or of freshly cut grass, the sound of cow
bells, the murmuring of flowing water or the sound of barking
dogs are all there waiting to be discovered.
There are many beautiful small villages waiting to be discovered
in Asturias. Taranes, Espinaredo, Amieva, Asiego, Cirieño,
to name just a few.
